“50s and 100s Don’t Matter to Me” – Rohit Sharma Explains His Match-Winning Approach vs Australia in T20 World Cup 2024

Indian captain Rohit Sharma delivered a blistering performance, scoring 92 runs off 41 balls, including eight sixes, in the Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Australia in Saint Lucia on Monday. Despite falling short of a century, his explosive innings, with a strike rate over 220, provided a crucial start for India. Rohit was eventually bowled by a Mitchell Starc yorker in the 12th over.
India won the match by 24 runs, with Rohit’s innings proving decisive. Australia’s Travis Head made a valiant effort in the chase with a 76-run inning but couldn’t steer his team to victory.
Post-match, Rohit emphasized that personal milestones are secondary to team success. He expressed satisfaction with contributing significantly to the team’s win, saying, “Milestones don’t matter to me; what matters is the team’s victory.”
Coming into the match, Rohit had been in a slump, with four scores under 25 and a single fifty against Ireland. However, he turned his form around spectacularly in the third over, attacking Starc, who had conceded just 5 runs in the first over. Rohit hammered Starc for 29 runs in the third over, hitting four sixes and a four, setting the tone for his innings and regaining his confidence.
Rohit’s dismissal at 127/2 in the 12th over left India with a strong foundation, eventually surpassing the 200-run mark. His aggressive approach and strategic play in the powerplay were pivotal.
Rohit Sharma Discuss His Approach vs Australia in T20 World Cup 2024
During the post-match presentation, where he was named ‘Player of the Match,’ Rohit discussed his approach. “In the powerplay, it’s about assessing the bowlers and playing accordingly. They changed their plans, and I needed to be smart. I backed myself, especially on a good wicket. It’s about putting the bowlers under pressure and achieving big scores. Today, it worked out,” he explained.
“It has been a good wicket, and you need to back yourself on good wickets, glad that it came off today. I told you that 50s and 100s don’t matter to me. Need to put the bowlers under pressure, and you need big scores for that. I tried to access all sides of the field, not just one side,” he further added.
