A 17-years-old Ayush Mhatre had a huge shoe to fill, replacing the injured Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the team, facing off his against his local team Mumbai Indians while representing their arch-rival CSK. And the youngster didn’t disappoint.

A young Ayush Mhatre has already made a lot of spark on social media with his brilliant performance in the domestic circuit over the last couple of years. At the age of just 17, he made his Mumbai senior team debut in first-class cricket playing in the Irani Trophy.

Ayush was recently added into the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) squad to replace the injured Ruturaj Gaikwad after the former went unsold in the Mega Auction but impressed CSK team management in round of trials.

His IPL debut match was against his local team Mumbai Indians in Mumbai, the stakes couldn’t be any higher and Ayush Mhatre absolutely impressed everyone with his inning of 32 runs off 15 balls coming in at number 3.

Meanwhile, after his spectacular inning, an old video of Ayush Mhatre’s interview from 2014 is going viral in social media when he was just 6-years-old. That video is from his days at the Vengsarkar Cricket Academy (operated by former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar). In the video, the young kid was replying to questions in short answers, just what you expect from a young kid.

When Ayush’s grandfather Laxmikant Naik was asked about why they sent him to train at young age, he added, “We saw his talent with the bat. We thought whether he becomes something big in the sport or not is a matter of destiny. But it is our duty to push him. We sent him to Vengsarkar Cricket Academy because who hasn’t heard his name? He was a legend before Sachin Tendulkar became one. So we thought we should send him to work under someone of that stature. Ayush has the talent to grow rapidly if he learns from the best.

Ayush Mhatre impresses in IPL debut

Meanwhile, the 17-years-old lad from Mumbai impressed the whole cricketing fraternity with his quickfire cameo of 32 runs off 15 balls that included 4 fours and 2 sixes and a strike rate of 213.33.

However, Chennai Super Kings suffered their 6th defeat of the IPL 2025 campaign against Mumbai Indians. CSK scored 176 runs with the batters failing to score the big runs. Later, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav scored half-century as the duo guided MI to a comfortable 9 wickets victory over the visitors at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

This defeat has further deepen their woes for the season for now MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). With just 2 wins in 6 matches, CSK now have a mountain to climb of they are to secure a place in the playoffs and one more defeat would certainly rule them out of the race for the playoffs.
