Ayush Mhatre and his Journey to the Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) recently extended an invitation to Ayush Mhatre, a promising young cricketer from Mumbai, for a mid-season trial during the IPL 2025. This move, confirmed by CSK’s managing director Kasi Viswanathan, was not prompted by injuries but rather to explore Mhatre’s potential as a future asset to the team.
At just 17 years old, Ayush Mhatre has already begun to make a name for himself in the cricketing world. He entered the scene with his remarkable debut in the Irani Trophy last October where he opened alongside accomplished players like Prithvi Shaw. During this match, he managed to score 19 runs for a Mumbai team studded with other cricket stars such as Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, and Sarfaraz Khan.
Notably, Mhatre marked a milestone at 17 years and 291 days by becoming the youngest batter to score more than 150 runs in List A cricket, achieving a high score of 181 off 117 balls against Nagaland. His proficiency extends to first-class cricket as well, having scored a half-century (52 runs from 71 balls) on his Ranji debut against Baroda. Moreover, in the Ranji Trophy game against Maharashtra, captained by CSK’s own Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre demonstrated his prowess with an impressive 176-run inning.
In addition to his batting skills, Mhatre has contributed as a bowler, obtaining a total of seven wickets in List A cricket, including the wicket of Abhishek Sharma, an opener for India and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Even at such a young age, Mhatre has struck a balance between raw talent and performance. In the Under-19 Asia Cup 2024/25, he was the second-highest run-scorer for India with 176 runs. His steady performance in various formats and striking ability have caught the attention of cricket scouts, including those from the CSK.
Currently, CSK stands 7th in the IPL 2025 points table, having won one out of three matches. They are slated to face the unbeaten Delhi Capitals on April 5, and it remains to be seen how Mhatre’s trial will unfold and influence their strategies as the season progresses.
