The Bangladesh women’s cricket team achieved a historic milestone by securing their maiden One Day International (ODI) victory over West Indies. The match took place on January 21, 2025, at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts. This significant win places Bangladesh in a crucial position in their quest for direct qualification to the 2025 ODI World Cup.

In the second ODI of the series, Bangladesh emerged victorious by 60 runs. Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty played a pivotal role in the win by leading from the front. She contributed a valuable 68 runs off 120 balls, which helped the team to a total score of 184 in 48.5 overs. The team’s bowling unit successfully bowled out the West Indies for 124 runs in 35 overs.

Nahida Akter was named Player of the Match for her impressive bowling figures of 10 overs, conceding only 31 runs and taking three wickets. Her performance was instrumental in restricting the West Indies batting lineup. Besides Nahida, Marufa Akter, Rabeya Khan, and Fahima Khatun each chipped in with two wickets, reinforcing the team’s attack.

The victory has brought Bangladesh level with New Zealand on 21 points in the race for ODI World Cup qualification. However, the team needs to win the series decider scheduled for January 24, 2025, to secure a spot for the upcoming World Cup to be held in India. Currently, Bangladesh has an inferior net run rate compared to New Zealand, making the upcoming match a must-win situation for automatic qualification.

This match not only marked a milestone in Bangladesh women’s cricket but also underscored the progress and potential of the team on the international stage. With the eagerness to capitalize on this momentum, the Bangladesh team is focused on the series decider, which could open the door to the ODI World Cup.
