The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were the first franchise to be eliminated from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The squad has been under immense pressure after winning only two of its first ten games.

Nothing has gone right for them, as CSK searches for answers everywhere. Unlike other clubs, CSK has been bringing up players for trials midway through the IPL 2025, with Urvil Patel’s name most recently garnering traction.

MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) called up Urvil Patel, who has been credited with hitting the quickest century in T20 Indian cricket, for mid-season IPL 2025 trials. Urvil Patel was among three players recently featured in mid-season trials hosted by five-time champions CSK, already been knocked out of the current season.

These trials were held in Chennai on April 27 and 28. The Times of India informed that Mumbai all-rounder Aman Khan and Kerala batter Salman Nizar were the two other cricketers selected to appear in these trials.

Mid-season tryouts for Urvil Patel with CSK

While speaking with ESPNcricinfo following CSK’s crushing season-ending loss to the Punjab Kings, Jaffer hinted that he had some news about Urvil and CSK.

“I’ve heard, I’ve got back room news that CSK have called , the guy who got a couple of hundred in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I’m surprised that he was not picked by any franchise,” Wasim Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

He also added, “I was surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He’s been asked to trial there, so I don’t know what’s cooking there.”

Urvil has been an accomplished ball striker in the domestic league. To top it all, he is the record-breaker of the second-fastest T20 century in history. He bellowed a 28-ball hundred playing for Gujarat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). That crazy knock against Tripura two days before he remained unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

His all-around performance in the SMAT 2024-25 was exceptional, scoring 315 runs in six games at a staggering strike rate of 229.92. Even with these magnificent performances, Urvil has not been selected by any IPL franchise, not even as a replacement player. Interestingly, the Gujarat cricketer has experience in the league, having played for the Gujarat Titans (GT).
