The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the brink of unveiling its new central contract list, with significant changes anticipated for some of India’s cricketing stalwarts. A pivotal meeting is reportedly scheduled for March 29 in Guwahati, where chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will discuss the future of these contracts alongside India’s squad planning for the upcoming England tour.

Currently, the focus is on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja, who have all stepped back from T20 International roles following India’s triumphant 2024 T20 World Cup campaign. All three players are currently in the prestigious A+ category of the BCCI’s central contract system. This system, a yearly retainership, is structured into four categories: A+, A, B, and C.

Given their recent withdrawal from T20Is, there is widespread speculation about whether Kohli, Sharma, and Jadeja will maintain their top-tier status. A demotion to the A category is anticipated, reflecting their reduced participation in this cricket format.

In contrast, Jasprit Bumrah is expected to retain his A+ status, a testament to his continued influence and contributions to the team. Similarly, Shubman Gill, India’s ODI vice-captain, might see a promotion to the A+ tier, indicating the BCCI’s confidence in his growing leadership capacity and performance.

The meeting is set to also potentially elevate Yashasvi Jaiswal and all-rounder Axar Patel from the B to A category, rewarding their consistent performances. Meanwhile, newcomers like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Abhishek Sharma are confirmed to be placed in the C category, adding fresh talent to the mix. The status of Ruturaj Gaikwad, however, remains uncertain at this juncture.

As these discussions unfold, the BCCI’s central contract list serves not just as a financial arrangement but also as a reflection of the team dynamics and strategic player roles moving forward. The cricketing fraternity keenly awaits the outcomes of these deliberations, which could usher in a new phase for several key players.
