India’s cricket team is facing challenges in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The latest setback came at the Adelaide Test, where India suffered a ten-wicket defeat against Australia. This match was part of a pink-ball Test series held at the Adelaide Oval. The victory allowed Australia to equalize the series at 1-1.

Rohit Sharma, one of India’s key players, returned to the playing XI in Adelaide after missing the first Test in Perth due to personal reasons. Despite being back, Sharma’s performance came under scrutiny as he batted at number six, scoring just three and six runs in the Test match. His recent track record in the Test format has been lackluster, with only a single half-century in recent matches. Following this performance, criticism has been directed at his role and effectiveness on the field.

Adding to the pressure, Sharma’s leadership is being questioned after India’s series defeat at home against New Zealand, where India lost 0-3. The Adelaide Test marked his fourth consecutive defeat as a captain, which has amplified the voices critiquing his captaincy.

Despite the challenges, former Indian cricketer Kapil Dev has come forward to support Rohit Sharma. Kapil Dev highlighted Sharma’s achievement in leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 victory, defending his capabilities by stating, “He’s done this for many, many years. So, let’s not doubt somebody.” Dev compared Sharma’s current situation to the past challenges faced by Virat Kohli, emphasizing the importance of resilience amidst criticism.

While the first Test in Perth was a triumph for India under Jasprit Bumrah as the stand-in captain, the focus now shifts back to Sharma as the series continues. The next Test match between India and Australia is scheduled for December 14 in Brisbane, with the series currently tied.

As the team prepares for the upcoming challenges, both players and management express hope in bouncing back, with eyes set on the forthcoming Test to take the lead in the series.
