Charlotte Edwards Takes Helm as England Women’s Cricket Team Head Coach

The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed Charlotte Edwards as the new Head Coach of the England Women’s cricket team. Edwards, a renowned figure in women’s cricket, has a distinguished career both as a player and coach.
Charlotte Edwards, a former captain of the England women’s cricket team, has been a pivotal figure in the team’s history. She played over 300 matches for England and led the team from 2006 to 2016. Under her captaincy, England won three Ashes series, an ICC Women’s World Cup, and an ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Edwards’s illustrious playing career earned her the title of Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2014.
Since her retirement in 2017, Edwards has transitioned into coaching, bringing her expertise to several teams. She has coached the Southern Vipers and Southern Brave in the English domestic leagues, as well as the Sydney Sixers and Mumbai Indians in global T20 leagues. Her vast experience in coaching and intimate knowledge of cricket make her an ideal fit for this role.
Clare Connor, ECB’s Deputy CEO, highlighted Edwards as the outstanding candidate for the position. Connor emphasized Edwards’s experience, passion, and expertise, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the team to success.
Edwards expressed her excitement about returning to a leadership role within the England women’s cricket team. She is eager to bring her experience to the team and drive them toward future successes.
Looking ahead, the England Women’s cricket team has a busy schedule that includes two home summer series, participation in the ICC Women’s World Cup in India, a home ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, and the inaugural Olympics for women’s cricket in Los Angeles in 2028. Edwards’s appointment comes at a crucial time as the team prepares to tackle these upcoming challenges.
Her first game as head coach will be against the West Indies on 21 May 2025, at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence in Canterbury. For this match, ticket sales are already impressive, with more than 50% sold out.
