As the Indian Premier League gears up for its 2025 season, the Delhi Capitals’ team roster draws considerable attention following their strategic retentions and acquisitions during the mega auction. With the retention of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abhishek Porel for a collective Rs 47 crore, the Capitals demonstrated their intent to build a core that could propel them to victory. Despite having Rs 73 crore at their disposal at the start of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the franchise faced setbacks as they could not secure former players Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant.

However, the Delhi Capitals made headlines by successfully signing KL Rahul for a whopping Rs 14 crore. Rahul, with an impressive 4683 runs from 132 IPL matches, is to captain the side, bringing a wealth of experience from previous stints with teams like RCB, SRH, PBKS, and LSG. The Capitals’ batting prowess is further bolstered by retaining Australian talent Jake Fraser-McGurk for Rs 9 crore after his noteworthy performance of 330 runs in nine matches in the previous season. The sale also saw the return of England batter Harry Brook, acquired for Rs 6.25 crore, and the retention of South African Tristan Stubbs for Rs 10 crore, adding depth to the batting line-up.

DC’s strategic use of Right to Match (RTM) cards saw the return of Jake Fraser-McGurk and Indian pacer Mukesh Kumar for Rs 9 crore and Rs 8 crore, respectively. The team fortified its bowling attack by signing prominent Australian pacer Mitchell Starc for Rs 11.75 crore, who brings 51 wickets in 41 IPL matches to the table, and T Natarajan for Rs 10.75 crore, well-known for his precision in death overs. With 67 wickets in 61 IPL matches, Natarajan’s addition is a significant boost to the bowling department.

The Capitals did not stop there; they welcomed Sameer Rizvi from Uttar Pradesh and Ashutosh Sharma from Ratlam, promising talents set to make their mark on the IPL stage. DC made substantial investments in their retained players too, with Axar Patel commanding Rs 18 crore after contributing 1653 runs and 123 wickets in his 150 IPL matches. Kuldeep Yadav’s consistent performance earning him 47 wickets in 39 matches justified his Rs 14 crore retention.

One of the talking points is who will secure the No.3 spot in the playing XI. With both Faf du Plessis and Harry Brook in the squad, it is bound to create a selection headache. Du Plessis’ experience and class make him a contender, while Brook’s promising talent offers a case for his selection.

The Delhi Capitals have assembled a formidable team for IPL 2025, a blend of experience and budding talent. With KL Rahul at the helm, the combinations of foreign and Indian players, seasoned campaigners and emerging prospects, the Delhi Capitals seem poised to tackle the challenges of the highly competitive league ahead. Fans will be keenly watching as the Capitals strive to translate their strategic auction moves into on-field success.
