Delano Potgieter Shines in SA20 with Five-Wicket Haul
The third season of the SA20 cricket league kicked off on January 9 with an exciting match between the defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape and MI Cape Town at St. George Park in Port Elizabeth. MI Cape Town emerged victorious with a commanding 97-run win over Sunrisers Eastern Cape, with Delano Potgieter’s exceptional performance being a highlight of the match.
MI Cape Town set a challenging target of 174 runs for Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The innings was bolstered by Delano Potgieter’s quick 25 runs off 12 balls. Interestingly, Potgieter used a bat gifted to him by Rashid Khan, which originally belonged to cricket legend Virat Kohli. In response, Sunrisers Eastern Cape struggled and ended up scoring only 77 runs, succumbing to MI Cape Town’s superior bowling lineup.
Delano Potgieter played a pivotal role in MI Cape Town’s bowling attack, claiming a spectacular five-wicket haul. Born in 1996 in Port Elizabeth, the 28-year-old right-arm seamer has shown promise over the years. Potgieter began his cricketing journey with Gauteng, making an immediate impact by topping the 2018 Africa T20 Cup with 217 runs from six matches. He further demonstrated his bowling prowess by leading Gauteng’s wicket tally in the 2018–19 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge, taking 17 wickets from nine matches.
Despite his consistent performances in domestic cricket, Potgieter has yet to receive a call-up to the South African national team in the shortest format. Additionally, he was not listed in the IPL 2025 mega-auction, a fact that may have surprised some considering his recent performances. Notably, three IPL teams missed the opportunity to sign him.
As the SA20 season progresses, anticipation builds for future matches, including the upcoming clash between Durban Super Giants and Pretoria Capitals. Potgieter’s recent display of skill has certainly set a high bar for the competition.
