In the second One Day International (ODI) against India at the Narendra Modi Stadium, England’s cricket team faced their fourth consecutive series defeat. Losing by four wickets to India punctuated a disappointing sequence for the English team. Captain Jos Buttler reflected on the match, highlighting the potential for England to have amassed a larger total if key players spent more time on the pitch.

England’s innings was highlighted by Joe Root and Ben Duckett who scored 69 and 65 respectively. Liam Livingstone also contributed with 41 runs, helping England to post a total of 304 runs in 49.5 overs. However, the team’s inability to capitalize on a promising start was apparent as they lost their last seven wickets for only 85 runs. Buttler emphasized that England’s batters needed to push for a higher score of around 350 runs to put more pressure on India’s formidable batting lineup.

India, led by captain Rohit Sharma, demonstrated a strong response. Sharma achieved his 32nd ODI century assisting India to chase down the target of 305 runs with 33 balls to spare. Sharma’s efforts were supported by vice-captain Shubman Gill, who scored 60 and participated in a significant 136-run opening stand with Sharma, setting the pace for the successful chase.

Buttler acknowledged the need for improvement within the team, recognizing opportunities that were missed in terms of batting contributions. He admitted that strategically, England required their top order to sustain longer innings to build an imposing score, reinforcing the depth and resilience required in international cricket competition.

The series showcased India’s strength and ability to effectively chase down targets, imparting lessons for the visiting team as they continue their ODI campaign.
