Faf du Plessis Named Vice-Captain of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2025

In a significant development for the Indian Premier League 2025, the Delhi Capitals have appointed former South African captain, Faf du Plessis, as their vice-captain. This announcement comes as part of the team’s strategic moves ahead of the new season.
Faf du Plessis previously captained the Royal Challengers Bengaluru until the IPL 2024 season. However, he was released from the team before the 2025 auction. The Delhi Capitals acquired du Plessis at his base price of Rs 2 crore, marking a new phase in his illustrious career.
Joining the IPL in 2012 with the Chennai Super Kings, du Plessis has also played for the Rising Pune Supergiant and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Over his IPL career, he has amassed 4571 runs in 145 matches, boasting an average of 35.99 and a strike rate of 136.37. These impressive statistics underscore his enduring skill and experience, even as he joins Delhi Capitals at the age of 40.
While du Plessis steps into the vice-captain role, KL Rahul, another former IPL captain who joined the Delhi Capitals this year, was not selected for this position. This decision indicates Delhi Capitals’ confidence in du Plessis’s leadership capabilities and his potential contribution to the team dynamic.
The leadership changes within the Delhi Capitals are not limited to the playing staff. Axar has been named the team’s new captain, replacing Rishabh Pant, who has moved to Lucknow Super Giants as their captain. Additionally, the team’s coaching setup has seen changes. Ricky Ponting, the former head coach, has shifted to Punjab Kings, with Hemang Badani taking over his responsibilities. The coaching team also features Matthew Mott as the assistant coach and Kevin Pietersen as the team mentor, supported by Munaf Patel, Venugopal Rao, and Vijay Bharadwaj in the management structure.
As the Delhi Capitals prepare for IPL 2025, these changes aim to fortify their quest for the title, especially after finishing as runners-up in the Women’s Premier League 2025, narrowly losing to the Mumbai Indians by eight runs. The team hopes that the addition of a seasoned player like Faf du Plessis will bolster their chances in the upcoming season.
