The New Zealand White Ferns are gearing up for a challenging white-ball series against Sri Lanka and Australia, with key player Georgia Plimmer poised to make a significant impact. The first of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) against Sri Lanka kicks off on Tuesday at McLean Park, Napier, at 2 PM. Georgia Plimmer, who debuted for New Zealand in August 2022, faced some criticism for her initial low scores. However, her performance was pivotal to New Zealand’s success in the T20 World Cup. A significant boost in her form was marked by a commendable 53 off 48 balls against Australia in Mackay, which elevated her confidence heading into the T20 World Cup in Dubai.

Unfortunately, Plimmer sustained a hip stress reaction after an ODI series in India, leading to a four-month hiatus from the game. Yet, she is returning to the field with renewed determination to prove New Zealand’s ability to compete against top teams like England and Australia.

The current series sees the absence of experienced players such as captain Sophie Devine and all-rounder Melie Kerr, making room for newcomers Emma McLeod, Bree Illing, and Izzy Sharp. Plimmer acknowledged the tough challenge after their last 10 consecutive defeats against leading cricket teams but remains optimistic about showcasing their capabilities at this level.

Following the three ODIs against Sri Lanka, the White Ferns will also play three T20 matches. The team is set to continue their campaign in the white-ball series against Australia. In Plimmer’s absence, the focus will be on adapting quickly and stepping up to fill the gaps left by senior players.
