The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) triumphed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final, securing their third title with an emphatic 8-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, May 26.

Kolkata Knight Riders Won a One-Sided IPL 2024 Final

This one-sided final saw KKR chase down a modest target of 114 runs in just 11 overs, capping off a high-scoring season with an anticlimactic but dominant performance.

KKR’s bowlers laid the foundation for the victory by dismissing SRH for the lowest total ever recorded in an IPL final. Mitchell Starc and Vaibhav Arora set the tone early, removing SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head within the first two overs.

Starc’s dismissal of the most six-hitting Abhishek Sharma was followed by his crucial wicket of Rahul Tripathi in the fifth over. The rest of KKR’s bowlers continued to decimate SRH’s batting lineup, with Andre Russell, Harshit Rana, and Varun Chakaravarthy contributing significantly.

Pat Cummins emerged as SRH’s top scorer with a 24-run knock from the lower order, but his dismissal in the 19th over sealed SRH’s fate as they were bowled out for a meagre total of 113.

In response, KKR’s run chase was straightforward. Despite losing Sunil Narine early to Cummins, Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz ensured there were no further hiccups. Gurbaz scored a solid 39 off 32 balls, while Venkatesh Iyer played a match-winning knock of 52 not out from 26 balls, hitting the winning runs with a single off an inside edge to bring KKR home.

How Much Prize Money Kolkata Received for Winning IPL 2024?

KKR’s comprehensive victory not only earned them the prestigious IPL trophy but also a substantial prize of INR 20 crore. SRH, despite their heavy defeat, received INR 12.5 crore as the runners-up. The total prize pool for the tournament was INR 46.5 crore, with KKR taking the largest share due to their victory in the final.

This win marked a significant achievement for KKR, ending a decade-long title drought and adding a third trophy to their cabinet, highlighting their dominance and resilience throughout the IPL 2024 season where they finished at the top of the league table with 20 points from 14 matches, two of which was washed-out due to rain.
