Former West Indies fast bowler, Ian Bishop, has shared a memorable experience of bowling to a young Sachin Tendulkar during a 1990 tour match. Bishop recalled being left astounded by Tendulkar’s powerful six that sent the ball into the trees, a moment that left a lasting impression on him.

Bishop spoke about this incident in a video by ESPNCricinfo following Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s record-breaking performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He drew comparisons between Tendulkar’s young brilliance and Suryavanshi’s recent heroics. Notably, 14-year-old Suryavanshi became the youngest player to score a T20 century and the fastest Indian to achieve an IPL century, scoring 101 off 38 balls against Gujarat Titans.

In the 1990 match, Tendulkar scored 105 runs on a challenging Chesterfield wicket. One of the highlights was his remarkable six off a back-length delivery from Bishop, a shot that left the bowler shocked.

Suryavanshi’s recent performance was equally impressive. He reached his century in just 35 balls, the second-fastest in IPL history, standing only behind Chris Gayle’s 30-ball hundred in 2013. His explosive innings featured seven fours and 11 sixes and was part of a 166-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal, which helped the Rajasthan Royals chase down 210 runs in just 15.5 overs.

In just three IPL innings, Suryavanshi has garnered 151 runs at an average of 75.50 and an impressive strike rate of 222.05. His performance included notable records, with 93% of his runs coming from boundaries, and he tied the record for most sixes in an IPL inning by an Indian, a record shared with Murali Vijay.

Ian Bishop’s comparison of these two players highlights the extraordinary talent and impact that young cricketers like Suryavanshi can have in the cricketing world, much like a young Sachin Tendulkar did decades ago.
