The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will feature an innovative hybrid hosting model, with Dubai and Lahore sharing responsibilities. This decision comes following an agreement between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan.

The tournament is set to run from February 19 to March 9, 2025, featuring the world’s top eight cricketing nations. A key element of this model is the provision for India’s matches. Matches involving India, including those against Pakistan, are to be held in Dubai. However, Pakistan’s matches, except those against India, will mostly take place in Lahore, maintaining geographical balance.

If India progresses to the final, the decisive match will occur in Dubai. Should India not reach the final stage, the event will shift to Lahore, Pakistan. This strategic arrangement respects the political considerations affecting regional cricket dynamics. Similarly, the semi-finals are planned to be held in Dubai if India participates, otherwise, Lahore will host these crucial matches.

The hybrid model for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 mirrors the format used during the 2023 Asia Cup, showcasing a flexible approach in managing sporting events amidst challenging diplomatic relations. Additionally, Pakistan has secured hosting rights for an ICC Women’s tournament set to take place post-2027 as part of this accord.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah has been instrumental in facilitating the agreement, reflecting the governing body’s role in adapting to the complexities of international cricket politics. This decision signifies not only a resolution to current challenges but also an ongoing commitment to inclusivity and fair competition in the sport.

The final choice of location—Dubai or Lahore—hinges directly on India’s performance within the tournament, emphasizing the impact of political considerations on sports planning and execution. As the cricket world anticipates the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, both India and Pakistan are set to leverage this agreement to bring thrilling cricket to fans under a framework of collaboration and strategic diplomacy.
