The ICC Champions Trophy makes its return after a gap of 7 years. The last edition was held in 2017 in which Pakistan beat India in the final in England to lift the Trophy and also earned the right to host the next edition, i.e. the 2025 edition.

The ICC Champions Trophy is the smaller format of the 50-overs game. Only the top eight teams participate in this tournament compare to the World Cup, which is a bigger tournament.

This edition, the top eight teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 qualified for the tournament, including the hosts Pakistan. The eight teams are India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, who will be divided into 2 groups of 4 teams.

Team India have been grouped alongside hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. Only the top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals. Team India will be playing all of its matches in Dubai including the semi-final and final if they qualify.

Today, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma officially announced the Indian team squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. The highlight of the squad is that Mohammed Shami is making his return to the team for the first time since the 2023 World Cup after he suffered an injury.

Shubman Gill has been the deputy for Rohit Sharma while youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal has been picked in the ODI team for the first time after impressing in T20Is and Tests. Shreyas Iyer, who was excluded from the central contract, is back in the team.

Dropping out from the team is Mohammed Siraj. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh will replace the Siraj in the team. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson has once again been overlooked and the two wicket-keepers for the tournament would be KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are set to continue opening while Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul continue at 3, 4 and 5 respectively. Rahul is set to don the keepers glove with Rishabh Pant set to serve as back-up.

Hardik Pandya will bring fire-power in the lower middle-order and is also set to bowl a complete 10 overs quota. As stated Rohit Sharma in the press conference, they have included both Jadeja and Axar Patel to add depth to batting, which is why we believe both are likely start.

Kuldeep Yadav is the only proper spinner in the team while Washington Sundar is the other spin bowling all-rounder option. The pace bowling department will include the lethal duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. There might be one change were we see either of Jadeja or Axar dropped for Arshdeep Singh to add more pace bowling depth.
