Mumbai Indians’ Auction Strategy for IPL 2025

With five slots filled, MI needs six more players to complete their starting lineup, and they also need to fill the reserve squad. Here’s how the team may approach the auction to build a balanced squad:

Key Auction Targets

1. Opener & Wicketkeeper Options

There are options who can open as well as do wicketkeeping. Jos Buttler is the most common name in terms of this scenario, but he will be costly for MI depending on their budget.

Ryan Rickelton: The South African opener could be a cost-effective option.

Quinton de Kock: As a former MI player, de Kock could provide balance and class to the top-order batsmen but would perhaps come at a price of about INR 7-8 crores.

2. Middle-Order Finisher

Nehal Wadhera (uncapped): MI might use their RTM card option in this case.

Tim David: An excellent finisher, David is expected to be auctioned for around INR 4-5 crores.

David Miller: Great maneuver too, though pricey. Miller is an experienced finisher, but retention is expected by the Gujrat Titans.

Romario Shepherd: A strong all-rounder, Shepherd would add depth to MI’s bowling as well as the batting section.

3. Foreign Fast Bowlers

in the bowler section, they will go for foreign fast bowler because MI loves to take service of the foreign pacers in their previous season

Mitchell Starc: KKR buys Starc for last season at 24.75cr, and this season Starc is released by KKR. Starc could be a boost to the pace section of MI but might be over budget for MI.

Marco Jansen or Josh Hazlewood: These two pace bowlers also have IPL experience and are great fast bowlers, so they could be a good bet in all aspects for MI.

4. Foreign Spinners:

Wanindu Hasaranga: A potent spinning option who can bat as well down the order; however, he could be costly, as last season he was also a target player for some of the more IPL teams.

Adam Zampa, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi: All spinners have a good amount of IPL and international experience. They can be cheaper from Hasaranga, and because of their previous performance, they could be a good pick for MI.

5. Indian Fast Bowlers:

Akash Madhwal: An effective Indian pace option to offer support to Jasprit Bumrah. He played a good supportive role for Bumrah in the last year. He also takes some crucial wickets for this franchise, including his 19 wickets in 13 matches.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Khaleel Ahmed: Both the players have too much experience in playing in the IPL and also for the international matches for India. By including these two players, the bowling attack of the Mumbai Indians will be solid.

6. Impact Players: For Strategic Depth The latest impact player regulation in IPL is an added advantage for MI as it encourages investment in multipurpose players.

Sai Kishore or Shreyas Gopal: These two in particular should also offer more tactical combinations for MI as impact players.

Mumbai Indians’ Potential Starting XI

Here’s a potential starting lineup for MI based on their confirmed squad and potential auction targets:

  1. Ryan Rickelton/Quinton de Kock
  2. Rohit Sharma
  3. Suryakumar Yadav
  4. Tilak Varma
  5. Hardik Pandya
  6. Nehal Wadhera
  7. Romario Shepherd/Tim David
  8. Marco Jansen/ Josh Hazlewood
  9. Wanindu Hasaranga/Adam Zampa/Keshav Maharaj
  10. Akash Madhwal/Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  11. Jasprit Bumrah
  12.  IMP: Sai Kishore/Shreyas Gopal

Reserves and Backup Options

MI might consider the following players as backup options:

  • Wicketkeeper: , Matthew Wade, or Jitesh Sharma.
  • Middle-order: Rovman Powell.
  • Indian Fast Bowler: Shivam Mavi or Chetan Sakariya.

The roster of the Mumbai Indian’s IPL 2025 is fast taking the form of a mix of experienced and young sprouting players amongst the core of their retained players, and with the careful auction strategy, the Mumbai Indians have good chances of returning back to the apex position.
