IPL 2025 MI: Mumbai Indians Latest Released and Retained Players List

MI:The five-time champion Mumbai Indians won their last IPL title in 2021, but since then they have been pretty poor by their standards. MI never finished at the bottom of the table until 2021, but they have finished twice at the bottom in the last three seasons. The franchise even made a massive change of captaincy in the IPL 2024 and appointed Hardik Pandya as the new captain.
But it didn’t go as planned; they ended up in 10th place on the table. But with the new season coming up, MI will hope for a better performance for their group. However, there will be the IPL 2025 mega auction, which will make things very interesting. According to some reports, all teams will be allowed to retain a maximum of six players.
So who will be those six players that will be retained by MI ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction? The franchise has to decide whether they want to continue with Hardik as captain or give the captaincy back to Rohit Sharma. There are a lot of things to do for the five-time champions. In this article, we will talk about the players whom MI can retain and the list of released players ahead of the IPL 2025.
IPL 2025 Mumbai Indians (MI): Possible Retentions
Player | Role |
Hardik Pandya | All-rounder |
Suryakumar Yadav | Batter |
Jasprit Bumrah | Bowler |
Rohit Sharma | Batter |
Tilak Varma | Batter |
Tim David | Batter |
1. Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya made his IPL debut in 2015 for Mumbai Indians, and over the years he became an integral part of the team. But the franchise released him in 2022, and he was picked by Gujarat Titans and led them to a title win in 2022. He has developed leadership skills, which is why MI traded him in 2024 and gave him the captaincy.
Though it will be a question whether he will be leading MI in the IPL 2025 or not, he is likely to be retained. Hardik is probably one of the greatest matchwinners in the current era, and his all-round skills are an asset to any team. Hence, we will see him playing for MI in the coming 18th edition as well.
2. Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah is. Arguably the best all-format bowler in the modern day, and it will be a stupid decision to release, and MI has very smart management, and they won’t do this mistake. Because if Bumrah goes into the IPL 2025 mega auction, every team will fight to have him at any cost. Bumrah has been the leader of the pack for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
And after his heroics at the T20 World Cup 2024, which won him the Player of the Tournament award, MI can’t release him now. He is their second-highest wicket-taker at the moment. Bumrah has taken 168 wickets for them at an economy rate of 7.31, and he is likely to lead MI’s bowling unit in the IPL 2025 as well.
3. Suryakumar Yadav

If Bumrah is important for MI’s bowling, Suryakumar Yadav is equally important for the batting department. His career has skyrocketed since he joined MI. He made his debut for India and now is the T20I captain. He is the best T20I batter for India, and it will be stupid to release him. That’s why he is likey to be a sureshot retention ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
He did well for them in 2024 as well and scored 345 runs at a strike rate of 167.47. Overall, Suryakumar is the third-highest run- scorer for the franchise in the IPL. He has scored 3033 runs at 35.26 and a strike rate of 148.09. He is a future captaincy candidate, which is why the franchise might look to retain him ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
4. Rohit Sharma

There were a few rumours that the Mumbai-based franchise might release former captain Rohit Sharma ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. But those were rumours only. Rohit recently led India to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 and was also India’s best batter in the competition. He has decided to play the white-ball formats in an aggressive manner, which has benefited the team he is playing for.
Rohit has also retired from T20Is and he will only be seen in the IPL. Adding to that, his brand value and fan following are another reason that the franchise can afford to release him. The former captain is the leading scorer for MI in the IPL. He has scored 5731 runs in 217 innings at an average close to 30 and a strike rate of 131.05, with two centuries and 36 half-centuries.
5. Tilak Varma

MI has groomed Tilak Varma into an upcoming superstar for Indian cricket, and he has gotten off to a decent start to his international career. He has grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and you will see him becoming a successful cricketer in the coming years. And a lot of credit goes to Mumbai Indians. The lefthander has been very consistent for the franchise and has become a key player for them.
He has scored 1156 runs for them in just 38 innings at an average of 39.86 and a strike rate of 146.32. Even in the IPL 2024, he scored 416 runs. He has scored 397, 343 and 416 runs in the three seasons he has played for them. That is great consistency. Hence, MI might look to use the Right To Match (RTM) card to sign Tilak Varma at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
6. Tim David

With Kieron Pollard retiring in 2022, MI needed some power down the order, and they signed Tim David. The Australian star hasn’t disappointed them either and has played some great innings at the back end of the innings. With MI mostly retaining Indian players, so there are chances that they can pick Tim David as their overseas pick and use an RTM card for him.
David has been pretty decent for them. Since joining the franchise in 2022, he has scored 658 runs in 34 innings at an average of 29.90 and a brilliant strike rate of 171.35. His role is to finish the game, and he has done that a few times already for MI in his IPL career so far. So, MI can retain him as their sixth pick ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
