With the Mega Auction in sight, many fanbases are already discussing which players their team should retain with teams allowed to retain a limited number of players. Although the number of players to be retained is yet to final after the BCCI recently held a meeting with IPL franchises, there is possibility that the retention number might be increased to 6 retentions.

In this article, we will discuss about what should Mumbai Indians‘ retention plan. Mumbai Indians had a horrible season where they finished at the bottom of the points table under new captain Hardik Pandya. There is already much debate of what is going to happen at Mumbai camp with reports that former captain Rohit Sharma set to leave while Mumbai Indians owners are reportedly considering changing the captain.

After Suryakumar Yadav appointed as the captain of the Indian T20I team, they might opt for Suryakumar Yadav as captain removing Hardik Pandya, who might be released completely. In this article, we have only mentioned 4 retentions since we don’t a confirmed number of player retentions yet. The following retentions are in no particular order.

Mumbai Indians Might Retain Suryakumar Yadav as New Captain

Suryakumar Yadav is currently the world’s best T20 batter ranked number 1 in the ICC T20I batters ranking. Suryakumar has been brilliant for Mumbai Indians and Team India. As a result, Suryakumar has been appointed as the new Indian T20I captain under new head coach Gautam Gambhir. It was believed that would assume the India T20I captaincy after Rohit Sharma, but Gautam Gambhir picked his former KKR vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav as the captain. With Mumbai Indians likely to be influenced by the same, Mumbai Indians might also offer Suryakumar Yadav the captaincy and retain him.

Jasprit Bumrah

Alongside Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah is currently world’s best bowler, be it the T20I format or the longer format of the game. Jasprit Bumrah was picked by the Mumbai Indians as a raw talent from the Indian domestic scenes. Bumrah has grown over the years and established himself as one of the world’s best bowler who has been leading the bowling unit for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Mumbai Indians would not even think about releasing him and is likely to be retained unless he himself opts not to stay with Mumbai Indians.

Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma made his IPL debut in 2022 and stunned everyone after scoring 397 runs in 14 matches in his debut season. Since then, he has gone on to score 343 runs in 11 matches and 416 runs in 13 matches in the IPL 2023 and 2024 season respectively. As a result, Tilak has also played for Team India and Mumbai Indians see a big future in him as a middle-order batter and would not want to let go of him.

Ishan Kishan

Mumbai Indians understand the value of the Indian wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan. The Ambani owned franchise waited an entire day to buy back Ishan Kishan for a whopping 15.25 crore in the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. Mumbai Indians now would be able to retain him for much cheaper price and would not want go into another bidding war in the IPL Mega Auction 2025 to buy back the left-hand hard-hitting batter. Ishan Kishan might be sold at a very high price in the Mega Auction if he is released into the mega auction since almost every team is searching for a quality Indian wicketkeeper batter, thus, it will be a sensible decision from Mumbai Indians to retain Ishan Kishan.
