Punjab Kings (PBKS) have struggled to make a mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the years. They have fallen short due to the inconsistency and leadership throughout the IPL journey. The inclusion of Shreyas Iyer in the squad for IPL 2025 will bring a lot of experience, leadership, and a winning mentality to the team.

Iyer has a proven track record in the IPL and international cricket. He was the captain of the IPL-winning campaign of Kolkata Knight Riders last year. His ability to anchor innings and accelerate when needed was the missing piece in Punjab Kings, and this is the main reason that Punjab Kings management brought him by Rs 26.75 crore from the IPL 2025 Auction.

Shreyas Iyer’s IPL Legacy

KKR’s Title-Winning Captain in 2024

Shreyas Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024. He led the team from the front to winning KKR’s third IPL title. Iyer’s performance was also good in that season; he scored 351 runs in 14 innings with a strike rate of 146 and an average of 39. He was one of the key players for KKR that season.

Delhi Capitals’ Leader in 2020

Before he joined KKR, Iyer was a key figure for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2020. In 2020, Iyer led DC to their first IPL final but they unfortunately lost the final match against Mumbai Indians. That season, he amassed 519 runs with three half-centuries and an average of 34, finishing as the fourth-highest run-scorer of the tournament.

Why Punjab Kings Need Shreyas Iyer in IPL 2025

The main point is middle-order stability. Punjab has lacked stability in their middle order over the years, and the inclusion of Iyer. He can anchor the inning after a great start of the team, and he can accelerate the inning when needed.

Iyer has consistently delivered in high-pressure situations, including the IPL finals and the Champions Trophy 2025. Iyer was the second highest run-scorer of the ICC Champions Trophy; he scored 243 runs in five matches at an average of 48.60. His under-pressure 48-run knock in the final match of the Champions Trophy was one of the most important innings of his career.

With his stability, experience, and aggression, Iyer could be the key factor for PBKS in the upcoming IPL season. His ability to control the middle overs and shift gears in the death overs will be very helpful for the Punjab Kings.
