KKR’s IPL 2024 Final Hero Mitchell Starc Hints at ODI Retirement; Likely to Play More Franchise Leagues

Australian fast-bowler Mitchell Starc has hinted at his potential retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following his triumph with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024. Having played a pivotal role in KKR’s third IPL title win with a Man of the Match performance, Starc expressed his intentions to possibly shift his focus more towards franchise cricket.
After years of prioritizing international cricket and managing his workload by staying away from the IPL, Starc’s return to the league was marked by an exceptional performance.

Speaking at a press conference after KKR’s dominant eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL final, Starc shared his thoughts on his future in cricket.
“The last nine years, I’ve prioritised Australian cricket. I have given myself a chance to give my body a break and spend some time away from cricket with my wife as well, so that’s certainly been where my head’s been for the last nine years,” Starc stated.
Reflecting on his career trajectory, he added, “Moving forward… look, I am certainly closer to the end of my career than the start. One format may drop off. There is a long time before the next one-day World Cup and whether that format continues for me or not… it may open doors for more franchise cricket.”
Aussie Pacer’s Performance in IPL 2024
Starc’s stellar performance in the IPL 2024, particularly in the later stages of the tournament, underscores his ability to deliver under pressure. Despite a shaky start, where he conceded 100 runs without a wicket in his first two games, he bounced back impressively. His match-winning figures of 3-34 in Qualifier 1 and 2-14 in the final were crucial in securing KKR’s title with the latter awarding him the Player of the Match for the Final.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season,” Starc remarked. “It’s been great, it leads into the World Cup, that’s the other side of the benefit of being here against some amazing players in an amazing tournament. It’s a great lead-up to a World Cup.”
Looking ahead, Starc expressed enthusiasm for continued participation in the IPL and possibly other franchise leagues. “Next year – I don’t know the schedule exactly – but I’ve enjoyed it, I look forward to being back next year and hopefully be seen in purple and gold [KKR’s colours] again.”
