Despite coming into the franchise with a lot of reputation, KL Rahul’s dip in form over the years have caused major controversy between the player and the franchise. Rahul scored 520 runs in the IPL 2024 but he was called out for his slow approach, who finished the season with a strike rate of 136 despite previously playing with over 160 strike rate during his Punjab Kings days.

One of the major controversy sparking moment was during the IPL 2024 when the team owner Sanjeev Goenka was seen furious with the Lucknow captain Rahul. It was finally confirmed on 31st October that Lucknow have moved on from Rahul.

The statement from the management that the franchise only preferred players who would play for the team rather than individual achievements, further ignited the heated relationship between Rahul and LSG.

Rumours in the market already started suggesting that there are number of teams who might go after KL Rahul. One of them rumoured was certainly his home team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), that’s where he began his journey. KKR, who in need of a captain after letting Shreyas Iyer go, were also linked with Rahul.

KL Rahul IPL Career & Stats

KL Rahul began his IPL journey with his home team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2013 season. He played only 2 matches and scored 20 runs. He was then signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for 1 crore ahead of IPL 2014. It was not a great season for Rahul as he scored only 166 runs in 8 innings. It wasn’t any different in 2015 season either.

But, his redemption arc really began in the 2016 IPL season when he once again returned to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Rahul scored 397 runs in 12 innings with a strike rate of 146.49 and was RCB’s third highest run scorer in that season. He then faced a setback for the 2017 season as he was ruled out for whole season due to shoulder injury.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) then decided to let Rahul go into the auction pool for the IPL 2018 Mega Auction. He was signed by the Punjab Kings for whopping 18 crore. He scored 659 runs in his first season with a strike rate of 158.41 for the Punjab Kings in 2018. He was then named the vice-captain of the team for the 2019 season. He completed his first century against the Mumbai Indians.

Going into the 2020 season, KL Rahul was named the captain of the Punjab Kings after their captain Ravichandran Ashwin was traded to Delhi Capitals. In his first season as the captain, Rahul scored 670 runs with a strike rate of 129.34 and won the Orange Cap for scoring most runs during the season. He followed that with another 600+ season and better strike rate.

However, ahead of the IPL 2022 Mega Auction, KL Rahul was signed by the Lucknow Super Giants in a pre-auction player draft as Lucknow were set to make their debut that season. In their first season, Rahul played a pivotal role to guide the team to the playoffs in their first season. Then it was a rather difficult season in 2023 that was cut short by an injury.

In the IPL 2024, Rahul once again scored over 500 runs, but approach was questioned by many. Team owner was also seen having a fierce chat with Rahul during the season. Eventually, both the parties decided to move on from each other.
