Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the three-time IPL winners, have sparked a whirlwind of speculation among cricket fans by sharing a picture of Ajinkya Rahane at the Eden Gardens. With the IPL 2025 season approaching, there is growing curiosity about Rahane’s potential role in the team, particularly regarding the vacant captaincy spot.

Ajinkya Rahane has been acquired by KKR at the recent IPL auction for INR 1.5 crore, indicating the franchise’s faith in his abilities. Rahane, known for his calm demeanor and strategic acumen, was considered a candidate for the captaincy after Shreyas Iyer’s departure to Punjab Kings. Rahane has prior leadership experience, having led Rajasthan Royals to the IPL playoffs in 2018.

At 36, Rahane is expected to play a significant role for KKR in the upcoming IPL season. His recent performances have left a mark, notably his excellent form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Moreover, he played a crucial innings for Mumbai, scoring 96 runs against Meghalaya, which helped secure a spot in the Ranji Trophy knockouts. Rahane is also set to captain Mumbai against Haryana in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal at Eden Gardens – a venue he may be seeing much of during the IPL.

Rahane last represented India in the World Test Championship final in 2022, but he continues to be a formidable presence in domestic cricket. Given his skill set and leadership qualities, the possibilities for him to take up the captaincy role at KKR are indeed being actively discussed among fans and analysts alike.

As KKR gears up for the IPL 2025 season, Rahane’s involvement is a point of interest, especially with the team needing a new captain to lead their campaign.
