Melie Kerr Joins Elite Group of Halberg Award Finalists

Melie Kerr, the distinguished New Zealand cricketer, is among the six finalists nominated for the prestigious Halberg Sportswoman of the Year award. At just 24 years old, Kerr has already made significant contributions to New Zealand cricket, especially in recent tournaments, earning her a place alongside top athletes in this sought-after accolade.

The ISPS Handa Halberg Awards is a reputable event in New Zealand, designed to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the nation’s athletes. The ceremony, organized by the Halberg Foundation, also serves as an important platform to raise funds to support individuals with physical disabilities in New Zealand

The 62nd ISPS Handa Halberg Awards night will spotlight 33 finalists across six categories, highlighting the best talent in various sports disciplines. This year, the event will take place on 18th February 2025 at the Spark Arena in Auckland, with the proceedings being broadcast live on Sky Sports.

In the Sportswoman of the Year category, Kerr is joined by an impressive roster of athletes, including Dame Lisa Carrington, Ellesse Andrews, Lydia Ko, Emma Twigg, and Erin Routliffe. Each of these women has made outstanding contributions to their respective sports, setting high standards for excellence and performance.

Kerr’s selection as a finalist comes after her stellar performances in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024. The 9th edition of this tournament took place in the UAE, hosted by Bangladesh, from October 3rd to 20th. Under the leadership of Sophie Devine, the New Zealand team secured their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title by overcoming South Africa in the final.

Kerr’s exceptional contributions to the team’s victory were recognized, as she was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament. She was the leading wicket-taker, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 7.33, and contributed 135 runs with an average of 27, proving her prowess as an all-rounder.

In addition to her T20 World Cup achievements, Kerr has shown consistent performance throughout the year. She has scored 387 runs with a strike rate of 103.75 and taken 29 wickets in T20Is. In ODI matches, she has amassed 204 runs and taken 10 wickets over seven innings in 2024.
