Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed his dissatisfaction with Mumbai Indians’ opener Rohit Sharma’s performance in the Indian Premier League 2025 season. Vaughan’s pointed remarks highlight the Indian cricketer’s challenging start to the IPL season, a development that has sparked discussions about Sharma’s current form and future in the team.

Sharma’s performance in the opening matches of the season has not been up to the standards expected from a player of his caliber. He scored only 15 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders, was dismissed for a duck against Chennai Super Kings, and managed just eight runs in the game against Gujarat Titans. Vaughan commented that Sharma’s numbers are average and do not match the expectations from a seasoned cricketer like him.

The pressure on Rohit Sharma is compounded by his role as an Impact Substitute in two of Mumbai Indians’ three matches this season. Despite his struggles, Vaughan noted the difficulty Mumbai Indians face in dropping a senior player like Sharma from the squad.

Mumbai Indians recently secured an eight-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, a match where debutant left-arm pacer Ashwini Kumar made headlines with a splendid four-wicket haul. He managed to dismiss notable players such as Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell, contributing significantly to the team’s victory. Additionally, Ryan Rickleton, a key scorer for the team, achieved his maiden IPL half-century, further supported by Suryakumar Yadav’s quickfire 27 runs off just nine balls.

This victory against KKR is a testament to the young talents in the team stepping up and delivering when needed. It also allows the team some breathing room before their upcoming match against Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.

While the team’s recent success is a positive outcome, the focus remains on Rohit Sharma’s form and how he will tackle his ongoing performance issues. The cricket community will keenly observe whether Sharma can return to the peak form that he is known for. His longstanding IPL average currently stands at 29.42 after 260 matches, but his recent form falls short of this benchmark with fewer than 140 runs in his last 10 games.

As Mumbai Indians prepare for their subsequent matches, the team’s management and fans will hope for a turnaround in Sharma’s form, aligning with the professional standards and potential he has routinely shown in the past.
