Mohammed Shami, the experienced Indian pacer, was anticipated to make a comeback in the T20I series against England. However, India’s decision to exclude him from the playing XI in the first T20I at Eden Gardens has drawn attention and speculation.

India’s selection strategy was influenced by several factors. Primarily, Shami has not participated in international cricket since the World Cup 2023. The decision to include him in the T20I squad was seen as a step to prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025, but concerns over his workload and previous injury history led to his exclusion from this match. The team management opted for a cautious approach to manage his fitness effectively.

To balance the squad, India chose to field first against England, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav’s decision after winning the toss. The team’s strategic plan highlighted the inclusion of Arshdeep Singh as the sole specialist speedster, supported by pace-bowling all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ramandeep Singh. This approach allowed India to focus on a stronger spin attack and an adaptable pace unit, aligning with their game plan for the series.

India’s lineup for the first T20I was Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, and Varun Chakravarthy. The exclusion reflects not only on Shami’s current physical readiness but also underscores the team’s strategic priorities, which include leveraging a versatile group of bowlers to tackle England’s batting lineup.

India’s decision clearly aligns with managing key players’ workload while maintaining an effective strategy on the field, ensuring Shami’s readiness for future fixtures while focusing on team performance in the immediate challenge against England.
