The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs race hots up tonight at the Wankhede Stadium as the Mumbai Indians (MI) host the Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 21. This is a direct competition between the two teams for the one remaining slot in the playoffs.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season has reached its final stage as there are only a few matches are remaining this season. We already have three teams confirmed for the IPL 2025 playoffs, the Gujarat Titans (GT), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals are the remaining two teams who are vying for that one remaining slot. This slot could very well be decided on May 21, when the Mumbai Indians host the Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium, directly competing for that 4th place. In today’s article, we take a look at the MI vs DC IPL 2025 playoffs qualification scenario.

If Mumbai Indians win vs Delhi Capitals

If the Mumbai Indians win vs Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians would confirm their playoff spot without needing to depend on future results. With the win, Mumbai will reach 16 points while Delhi would be able to reach maximum of 15 points.

If Delhi Capitals beat Mumbai Indians

If the Delhi Capitals beat the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium on May 21, the Delhi Capitals would leapfrog MI to 4th place with 15 points, 1 more than that Mumbai. However, only this won’t confirm their place in the playoff.

Other than beating MI, Delhi Capitals would also have to beat Punjab Kings in their last match of the league phase. That would take the points total to 17 points, impossible for MI to overtake.

If DC win vs MI but loses to PBKS

If Delhi wins vs MI but fails to win vs Punjab Kings, then they must hope that Mumbai lose their last league phase game against Punjab Kings. In that scenario, DC will end with 15 points while MI will remain on 14 points.

On the other hand, if the Delhi Capitals win vs Mumbai Indians but loses against Punjab Kings, then Mumbai Indians must beat the Punjab Kings to qualify for the playoffs or else Delhi would book their place in the top four.

What if MI vs DC is abandoned due to rain?

There is high chance of thundershower during the match in Mumbai, making it unlikely that we will have any result in the Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals match.

In such scenario, both teams will share the points with both teams maintaining their position at 4th and 5th respectively. The playoff spot would still be open and it will depend on their last game vs Punjab Kings.

If Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings, they must hope Punjab beat MI which allow them to leapfrog MI. If MI also beat Punjab, then Mumbai Indians will qualify.

If Delhi Capitals loses vs Punjab Kings (PBSK) and Mumbai Indians beat Shreyas Iyer led side, then Mumbai will qualify.

If both the teams loses to Punjab Kings in their respective last match of the league phase, then Mumbai Indians will qualify as they have one more point that Delhi Capitals.
