In a major development in women’s cricket, Charlotte Edwards is stepping down as the head coach of Mumbai Indians Women. She is set to take up the position of Head Coach of the England Women’s national cricket team.

During her tenure, Edwards led the Mumbai Indians to two Women’s Premier League (WPL) titles in three seasons. The team clinched victory in the inaugural WPL in 2023 and secured another win in 2025 under her leadership.

Charlotte Edwards has a rich history with England’s national team, having captained it for over a decade from 2005 to 2016. Under her captaincy, England won multiple ICC World Cup titles. Edwards also made history by becoming the first player globally to score over 10,000 runs in international formats.

As a coach, she has been remarkably successful, claiming eight trophies in five years. Her achievements include five Women’s Cricket Super League titles and a championship win in The Hundred.

Mumbai Indians, owned by Reliance Industries through Indiawin Sports, paid ₹912.99 crore (approximately US$100 million) for the franchise’s rights. Edwards was praised for her development-focused approach and cultivating a culture of excellence within the team. She was not only seen as a coach but also as a friend and leader, contributing significantly to the team’s successes.

Her move to coach the England Women’s team comes at a time when the team is aiming to recover from a series of poor performances, including a disappointing 16-0 Ashes defeat to Australia. Edwards’ departure leaves Mumbai Indians with the challenging task of finding a successor capable of maintaining the high standards she established.

Edwards’ journey from a player to a coach has paved the way for future generations of female cricket coaches, establishing her legacy in both England and Mumbai.
