New Zealand Captain Kane Williamson Reveals Retirement Plan After Group Stage Exit in T20 World Cup 2024
New Zealand limited-overs captain Kane Williamson stated that it’s premature to decide on his future in T20 internationals following the conclusion of the New Zealand’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a victory over Papua New Guinea on June 17. Williamson emphasized that the team’s focus would now shift to red-ball cricket, particularly with the World Test Championship (WTC) final approaching next year.
Despite being a versatile player excelling in all three formats, Williamson’s T20I statistics are not as impressive as his performances in Tests and ODIs. Since his debut in October 2011, the 33-year-old has played 93 T20Is, scoring 2,575 runs.
Kane Williamson says focus on other formats now and T20I future still undecided
After the win against Papua New Guinea in the last match of their campaign, Williamson reflected on his future in T20Is, saying, as reported by ESPNCricinfo: “I don’t know. There’s a bit of time between now and then, so it’s about regrouping as a side. We’ve got red-ball cricket over the next year basically, so it’s back into some other international formats, and we’ll see where things land.”
Although Williamson remained unbeaten on 18 in the match against Papua New Guinea, his overall form in the tournament was concerning, with early dismissals against Afghanistan and the West Indies. This marks the first time New Zealand has exited the T20 World Cup at the group stage.
The Black Caps’ campaign included losses to Afghanistan and the co-host of the tournament West Indies, but they managed to secure wins against Uganda and Papua New Guinea to wrap-up their campaign.
