Nitish Rana Set for Delhi Homecoming After Securing NOC from Uttar Pradesh

Nitish Rana is heading home. The dynamic left-hander has secured his No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association, paving the way for his return to Delhi after two challenging seasons away from the capital.
The 32-year-old batsman, who spent his formative years playing for Delhi until 2022, cited family reasons for his decision to return. “The experienced batter asked for an NOC and we have given it to him,” confirmed UPCA’s chief executive officer Ankit Chatterjee, speaking to ESPNcricinfo.
While the paperwork is nearly complete, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) secretary Ashok Sharma remains cautiously optimistic. “Rana has spoken to us about his decision and has already received the NOC from UP. However, DDCA has not yet received a copy of his NOC. Only after receiving it can we say anything about his chances of playing for Delhi,” Sharma explained.
A Tough Stint in Uttar Pradesh
Rana’s two-year adventure with UP proved more challenging than anticipated. Despite being handed the captaincy, his performances fell short of expectations. The numbers tell a sobering story – just 150 runs in six Ranji Trophy innings during the 2024-25 season, with only one half-century to show for his efforts.
His T20 form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy was equally concerning, managing just 111 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 114.43. The struggles continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he played only two matches before being dropped. Even his IPL 2025 campaign with Rajasthan Royals was cut short by injury after scoring 217 runs in 11 innings.
The writing was on the wall when Rana wasn’t included in this year’s UP T20 League auction. His overall record for UP reads: 447 runs in ten first-class matches, 72 runs in seven List A games, and 314 runs in 16 T20s. While he did captain the side in multiple formats, victories were hard to come by.
What Lies Ahead in Delhi?
Rana’s potential homecoming isn’t without its complications. Cricket fans might remember his heated on-field exchange with Delhi’s current captain Ayush Badoni during last season’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which required umpire intervention. How the two will gel in the same dressing room remains to be seen.
Competition for middle-order spots in Delhi’s lineup is fierce, with several talented batsmen vying for places. However, Rana’s experience and proven track record at the highest level could give him an edge. His aggressive left-handed batting style and ability to accelerate in the middle overs have always been his strengths.
If the DDCA formally accepts his NOC, Rana could feature in the Delhi Premier League scheduled for August. This would provide him with the perfect platform to rediscover his touch before the domestic season begins. For a player who has represented Kolkata Knight Riders with distinction in the IPL and shown glimpses of his destructive best, a return to familiar surroundings might be exactly what he needs.
Sometimes, the best way forward is to go back home. For Nitish Rana, Delhi’s pitches, crowds, and cricketing culture could provide the spark to reignite a career that still has plenty to offer.
