Orange Alert Threatens IPL 2025 Opener in Kolkata

The IPL 2025 season is facing a challenging start with weather disruptions threatening the opening match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Scheduled to be held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Friday, April 4th, the match is at risk due to adverse weather conditions predicted for the region.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an “orange alert” for Kolkata and several surrounding districts. Severe weather conditions, including thundersqualls, gusty winds, lightning, hailstorms, and moderate rainfall, are anticipated. This forecast raises concerns about the feasibility of the match proceeding as planned.
On the eve of the much-anticipated opener, a steady drizzle led to the premature conclusion of practice sessions for both KKR and RCB. The sessions, which began at 5pm, were halted around 6pm due to rain. Despite the weather challenges, Eden Gardens is equipped with full ground covers to protect the playing surface.
The IPL 2025 opener is set to begin at 7:30pm, with the toss scheduled for 7pm. Additionally, a grand opening ceremony featuring performances by Shreya Ghoshal and Disha Patani is planned for 6pm, weather permitting.
In light of the weather forecasts, IPL regulations allow for a one-hour extension window for league-stage matches, with a minimum five-over match being played until 10:56pm, and play extending up to 12:06am if required.
Rain has already impacted preparations, having washed out a KKR intra-squad practice match after one innings earlier in the week. The teams and fans are hopeful that the weather will permit a full game without interruptions. The cricket community continues to watch the weather closely as the countdown to the opening match progresses.
