Indian cricket team’s star off-spin bowler and veteran Ravichandran Ashwin has officially announced his retirement from international cricket right after the conclusion of the The Gabba Test between India and Australia.

Ravichandran Ashwin made his Test debut on the 6th November, 2011 playing against the West Indies. Since then, he has become veteran for Team India in all formats.

Ashwin was excluded from Team India’s playing XI for the 3rd Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match between India and Australia in Brisbane. The match though ended in a draw after much of the match was interrupted due to rain, including the last session of the match.

Ravichandran Ashwin last played for Team India in the 2nd Test match vs Australia in Adelaide. The 38-years-old scored 22 runs in the 1st inning and 7 runs in the 2nd inning. With the ball, he only bowled in one inning and picked 1 wicket for 53 runs in 18 overs.

Ashwin is most recognised for his contribution in the red ball cricket for Team India with his career lasting over a decade. He has played 106 Test matches for Team India and has scored 3503 runs and taken 537 wickets, establishing himself as one of the greatest spin bowler in the world.

The man from Tamil Nadu has played also played 116 ODI matches and 65 T20I matches for the Men in Blue and has taken 156 and 72 wickets respectively. He also won the coveted 2011 Cricket World Cup played in India.

Ashwin though continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and he will turning out for his home team Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025.

The cricketing world got the early hint of the veteran spin bowler’s retirement when pictures surfaced of former India captain Virat Kohli having emotional moments with Ashwin early morning on 18th December.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-2025 season currently hangs on level terms after the 3rd Test played at the iconic Gabba, ended in a draw. The match was a stop and start throughout the five days with the last session of the 5th day also getting washed out, resulting in the match ended in a draw.

With this, the scoreline currently stands 1-1 after the first 3 matches with 2 more matches still to come. Up next will be the Boxing Day Test starting from 26th December in Melbourne followed by the 5th and final match of the series starting in New Year on 3rd January.
