The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) secured their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title with a resounding 8-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

This triumph marks KKR’s first IPL trophy in a decade, bringing immense joy to the players, management, and fans. One highlight of the celebration was KKR captain Shreyas Iyer’s recreation of Lionel Messi’s iconic post-FIFA World Cup 2022 victory celebration, a gesture that captured widespread attention.

Shreyas Iyer and KKR Celebrate IPL 2024 Win

After receiving the IPL 2024 trophy from BCCI president Roger Binny and secretary Jay Shah, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer mimicked Messi’s jubilant celebration before handing the trophy to Rinku Singh.

Speaking to the broadcasters after the match, Iyer expressed his elation, saying, “It is pleasing and the performance has been flawless throughout. I am running out of words right now. We have been tremendous right from game one, and when we stepped out, all we demanded from ourselves was to back each other no matter the situation. The game could have gone either way. They have been playing phenomenal cricket, SRH, throughout the season.”

Iyer acknowledged the fortunate circumstances that favored KKR in the final, stating, “Today, we were lucky enough to bowl first and, at the same time, every situation went in our favor. Thanks to SRH for the way they have played throughout the season. They have been simply phenomenal.”

Kolkata Knight Riders Won The Most One-Sided IPL Final

KKR’s bowlers dominated the match, restricting SRH to a modest total of 113 runs. Andre Russell was the standout performer with three wickets, while Harshit Rana and Mitchell Starc each took two wickets.

Chasing the target, KKR lost an early wicket when Sunil Narine was dismissed. However, a crucial partnership between Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz steadied the innings. Despite Gurbaz’s late departure, KKR comfortably reached the target, with Venkatesh Iyer scoring the winning run in the 11th over.

This comprehensive victory not only ended KKR’s ten-year wait for an IPL title but also showcased their dominance throughout the season, culminating in a memorable win that will be celebrated by their fans and remembered in the annals of IPL history.
