The IPL 2025 Mega Auction has garnered interest from all around the corner with some of the best T20 players from India and world cricket is set to feature in the intense bidding war in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. One of those player is current reigning championship winning captain Shreyas Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer will play for the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 season. It was a big bidding war between the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals. Iyer’s former team KKR were interested too initially. Iyer will play for PBKS for whopping 26.75 crore.

Shreyas Iyer leaves KKR after winning IPL 2024 as captain

The Indian middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer made a shocking decision leave the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the IPL 2024 season. It was the franchise that he just to the IPL 2024 title in Chennai few months back. It is believed that while KKR were interested in retaining the right-hand batter and captain of the team, but Iyer was actually interested in testing his market value in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.

Shreyas Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was the most dominant team in the IPL 2024 season, finishing at the top of the points table with 20 points from 9 win, 3 losses and had to see 2 of their matches get washed out due to rain. The team was top notch and deliver from the opening duo of Phil Salt, Sunil Narine to the bowlers Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, Mitchell Starc, Varun Chakravarthy.

Many cricket experts touted the KKR unit as the best ever squad built in the IPL history, surpassing the Mumbai’s dominant 2019-2020 squad. They displayed utter dominance in the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad, who were record breaking team throughout the tournament, scoring tons of runs. But in the final match, KKR bowled out SRH for just 113 runs and won the match by 8 wickets and still 10 overs of play left.

Rumours in the market already suggests that there are number of teams looking to buy Shreyas Iyer for big money. Reports states that Delhi Capitals have reserved a big purse for their former captain while RCB, Lucknow and Punjab Kings have also been linked.

Shreyas Iyer IPL Career & Stats

Shreyas Iyer’s IPL career began in the year 2015 as Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), picked the Indian youngster for 2.6 crores INR. Iyer became an instant hit with the franchise scoring 439 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 128.36 and average of 33.77. He became the highest scoring uncapped batter that season and won the Emerging Player of the Tournament award.

The 2016 season was rather disappointing, resulting in getting dropped from the team after 6 matches, from which he scored only 30 runs. But, after that, it has only been upwards trajectory for the right-hand batsman. He scored 338 runs in 2017, 411 runs in 2018, 463 runs in IPL 2019.

Shreyas Iyer was retained by the franchise ahead of the 2018 Mega Auction. He was eventually made the captain of the team replacing Gautam Gambhir on the recommendation of Gambhir after the former India opener decided to step-down from his position as Delhi had a woeful start to the campaign.

He led the Delhi Capitals for the first time on 27 April, 2018 against his future team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He also played an unbeaten match winning knock of 93 runs off 40 balls in that match. Iyer remained the captain until IPL 2020, when he guided the Delhi Capitals to their first ever IPL final, unfortunately lost to Mumbai Indians.

Before the start to IPL 2021 season, Shreyas Iyer was injured and ruled out of the season. Delhi made Rishabh Pant the captain. But, due to the COVID-19 situation then, the league’s 2nd phase was held in UAE in September and October, which allowed Iyer to play the remainder of the matches for the franchise. However, he was not returned the captaincy as Pant continued as captain.

In the end, in search of leadership role, Shreyas Iyer left Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2022 Mega Auction. Kolkata Knight Riders secured the India international batter for 12.25 crore. Although Iyer scored 402 runs of 14 matches, KKR failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Shreyas then once again missed the IPL 2023 season due to back injury. He made his return for the IPL 2024 season and was reinstated as captain from Nitish Rana, who led the previous season. This was also the first season for Shreyas Iyer as KKR captain playing in India as the 2022 season was held in UAE.

And it was a memorable season for the skipper. While 351 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of 146.86 and average of 39.00, his team displayed truly dominant performance throughout the tournament to win the IPL 2024 crown. However, ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in November, Shreyas Iyer decided to leave the franchise.
