Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins revealed that the decision to use Shahbaz Ahmed as an impact substitute was head coach Daniel Vettori’s brainchild.

This strategic move proved pivotal in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL), where Sunrisers’ reliance on pace was supplemented by an unexpected focus on spin at the Chepauk pitch. Cummins surprised many by introducing the spin duo of Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma.

Pat Cummins Reveals Daniel Vettori Mastermind Behind Shahbaz Ahmed Impact Sub

Shahbaz Ahmed made a significant contribution, scoring 18 runs and taking three crucial wickets during the middle overs. Alongside Abhishek Sharma, the left-arm spinner ensured Sunrisers would face Kolkata Knight Riders again in the final, following their match in Qualifier 1.

“That was Vettori’s choice; he likes his left-arm orthodox and wanted as many left-arm orthodox bowlers as possible,” Cummins said, explaining the tactical decision.

Abhishek Sharma’s Contribution With the Ball After Failure With Bat

While Abhishek Sharma didn’t have a notable batting performance, scoring only 13 runs, he made up for it with his bowling, taking key wickets of Shimron Hetmyer and Sanju Samson.

Cummins praised the spinners’ performance, saying, “It was a surprise move, but Abhishek bowled beautifully. Those two spinners won us the game in the middle overs. Our batting strength and experienced bowlers like Bhuvi, Nattu, and Unadkat make my job easier.”

The left-arm spin duo of Ahmed and Sharma combined to take five wickets for 47 runs in their eight-over spell, maintaining an economy rate of 5.87.

Reflecting on the match, Cummins mentioned that chasing 170 was challenging and highlighted the team’s cohesive spirit. “The boys have been fantastic all season. There’s a great vibe in the squad, and reaching the final was our goal from the start. We knew 170 would be tough to chase, and with a few wickets, we had a chance,” he added.

In the match, after winning the toss, Rajasthan Royals’ captain Sanju Samson opted to bowl. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a total of 175/9, thanks to Heinrich Klaasen’s rapid 50. The spin duo then restricted Rajasthan to 139/7, securing a 36-run victory and a place in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 26.
