In a recent meeting between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the owners of the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) CEO Kavya Maran put forward several proposals regarding player retentions, auction purse, and the frequency of mega auctions ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

One of the key points of discussion was the retention policy. Kavya Maran suggested that a minimum of seven players should be retained by each franchise, with no limit on the number of overseas, Indian, or uncapped players that can be retained. She also proposed that teams should have the choice to discuss with players about retention or the right to match (RTM) at the auction.

Kavya Maran’s recommendations also included a call for mega auctions to be held every five years, providing teams with a more stable roster over a longer period. This suggestion aims to balance the need for continuity with the excitement and unpredictability that auctions bring to the league.

Debate on Uncapped Players

The meeting also touched upon the topic of retired players and their potential classification as uncapped players. This discussion was particularly relevant in the context of Chennai Super Kings‘ (CSK) former captain, MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, could potentially be classified as an uncapped player under the old regulation, which was in place until 2021. This would allow CSK to retain him at a lower cost, as uncapped players had a lower retention price compared to capped players.

However, Maran expressed her concerns about classifying Dhoni, a decorated cricketer, as an uncapped player, stating that it would be “disrespectful” to the individual and his value in the auction. She suggested that the auction should determine the value and caliber of retired players, respecting their contributions to the game over the years.

MSD

The BCCI is expected to announce the rules for retention by the end of August, taking into consideration the feedback and suggestions from the franchise owners. As the discussions continue, the future of Dhoni and other retired players in the IPL 2025 season remains uncertain.
