The Afghanistan cricket team registered a historic win against Australia in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. Afghanistan beat Australia by 21 runs to open up all the cards for the Group as the race for the semi-final hots-up.

Afghanistan and Australia faced off just about 6 months after their fantabulous class in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Batting first, Afghanistan scored 148 runs on a difficult batting condition.

played an instrumental knock of 60 runs of 49 balls and was well supported by Ibrahim Zadran, who both added 118 runs for the opening wicket. However, other Afghan batters failed as Afghanistan posted 148 runs on the board.

Defending the total, Afghanistan managed 3 crucial wickets of David Warner, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh in the powerplay itself. After a small partnership between Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, Australia kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.

Stoinis departed on 71, Tim David on 85 followed by the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell when Australia had 106 runs on the board. The wickets continue to fall and Australia eventually got all out 127 runs, giving Afghanistan a historic win.

Afghanistan Make Amends for ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Meanwhile, the Afghanistan cricket team were left heart-broken at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 7 as despite getting close to a massive win against the all-mighty Australia, Glenn Maxwell’s double century helped Australia recover from 91-7 to win the match chasing 292 runs without losing further wickets.

With this crucial win for the Afghanistan team, the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Group 1 has completely opened-up. India has 4 points from 2 wins in 2 matches while both Australia and Afghanistan have 2 points from 2 matches each. Bangladesh have lost both the matches so far. Australia next take on India while Afghanistan go against Bangladesh and it could very well see Afghanistan make it past Australia if they beat Bangladesh and India beat Afghanistan on June 25 and 24 respectively.
