Pre-tournament, South Africa cricket team have always been one of the best team and one of the favourites to win the T20 World Cup. Same is the story in the T20 World Cup 2024, where South Africa have picked one of the strongest team on paper, but how they will do in the competition, is very much uncertain.

South Africa have never made it to the T20 World Cup final in their history. The closest they came was the semi-finals in 2009 and 2014, where they lost to Pakistan and India respectively. They have been knocked out of the Super 8/10/12 stage a total of 6 times and twice in the semi-finals.

However, in 2024, South Africa will be looking to change their fortunes. They have a great squad with some in really good form and we had a real trouble picking just 5 players from the bunch of talent they are taking to West Indies.

Aiden Markram

Aiden Markram had a disappointing IPL 2024, where he mostly had to sit out because of the four overseas players rule. But, when he got the opportunity, he failed. But, looking at his T20I career so far, you can’t doubt him that when he goes going, it’s tough stopping him. Aiden has played 39 T20Is for South Africa and has scored 1118 runs with a strike rate of whopping 150.7. He can also anchor the inning in chase of a collapse and accelerate later, which will come handy for South Africa and he is also their captain in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Heinrich Klaasen

Heinrich Klaasen was not a much of a bigger thing, but he has improved his game considerably in the recent months. Klaasen has played 43 T20Is so far and has not done anything spectacular, scoring only 722 runs with a strike rate of 147. But his form in the IPL will give a big boost to South Africa. Klaasen has a great record in IPL. In 35 matches, Klaasen has scored 993 runs with a strike rate of 168.3.

David Miller

David Miller, popularly known as Killer Miller for his ability to kill the game off. David Miller has been one of the best lower-order batter who has finished the game in favour of his team so many times. David Miller, 34, has played 116 T20I matches since his debut in 2010 and has scored 2268 runs with an average of 33.9 and strike rate of 144.6. Miller has also displayed his class in the IPL, having scored 2924 runs in 130 matches. He will be responsible for winning the matches for his side. The other batting options South Africa have are Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton.

Tabraiz Shamsi

Left-arm leg-spin bowler, often referred as the Chinaman bowler, Tabraiz Shamsi will be the lead spin bowler for South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024. Although they have Keshav Maharaj in the team, Shamsi is more experienced having played 65 T20Is since his debut in 2017 and has taken 78 wickets. When there is assist for spin bowlers, there is no doubt that Tabraiz Shamsi is gonna cause some trouble for the batters.

Gerald Coetzee

We had a real big trouble picking the bowlers in the list and the only pacer we have included in the list is Gerald Coetzee, not that because others are not, but because South Africa have one of the best pace bowling line-up in the T20 World Cup 2024. We have picked Gerald Coetzee because he has been much preferred in the series leading upto the World Cup. Gerald Coetzee is a young pacer who has got great speed and line and length. Coetzee has played only 6 T20Is and has taken 8 wickets. He had a good outing in the IPL with Mumbai Indians, taking 13 wickets in 8 matches. The other pace bowling options that South Africa have under their disposal are Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Bjorn Fortuin, Ottniel Baartman and Marco Jansen.
