The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) recently declined the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) request to host relocated Pakistan Super League (PSL) matches in the United Arab Emirates. This decision has garnered significant attention due to speculations regarding external influences, particularly from Indian cricket authorities.
The ECB’s decision is believed to be largely influenced by a nudge from Indian cricket counterparts. An unnamed ECB official confirmed this influence, famously citing, “We owe it to the BCCI and Jay Bhai.” Jay Shah, who served as the BCCI secretary and currently holds the position of ICC Chair, played a pivotal role in the UAE’s decision. Shah has good relations with the UAE leadership and its cricket board.
The relationship between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the ECB has been described as amicable and cooperative. This cooperation was evident during the hosting of various cricket events in the UAE, including multiple seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the 2021 T20 World Cup. These events have potentially strengthened the ties between the two cricket boards, indirectly influencing the decision not to accommodate PCB’s request.
Initially, the ECB showed willingness to host the PSL matches due to the positive anticipation surrounding the ICC Champions Trophy. However, the decision was also influenced by financial considerations. The ECB cited unfeasible financial figures to justify the denial, which proved unaffordable for the financially constricted PCB.
The PCB had hoped to move the PSL to Dubai but faced resistance due to hesitation among foreign players and the eventual financial disagreements. The planned relocation was thus postponed. The decision by the UAE not only highlights the influence of cricket diplomacy but also underscores the financial and logistical intricacies involved in organizing such significant tournaments.
