“There is Nothing to Answer to Anyone” – Shakib Al Hasan Reacts to Virender Sehwag’s “Feel Ashamed of Performance” Remark
Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan responded to former India opener Virender Sehwag’s critical comments, saying he did not have anything to say in response. Sehwag had suggested that Shakib should “feel ashamed of his performances” and “retire from the format” following Shakib’s underperformance in the first two matches of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
Shakib returned to form with the bat in Bangladesh’s crucial 25-run win over the Netherlands at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on Thursday, scoring an unbeaten 64 off 46 balls to help set a competitive 160-run target. The Bangladeshi bowlers then restricted the Dutch to 134 for eight, inching closer to the Super Eight.
Shakib Al Hasan Answers to Virender Sehwag’s Criticism
In response to Sehwag’s comments, made during a Cricbuzz show after Bangladesh’s four-run defeat against South Africa, Shakib appeared unperturbed. When asked about the remarks during a press briefing following the Netherlands game, Shakib asked “who” had made the comment and calmly stated that it is not a player’s job to answer critics with words.
“There is nothing to answer to anyone. I think when a current player is not being able to contribute to the team as much as is expected of him then it usually invites a lot of questions, and I don’t think it is a very bad thing,” Shakib said.
Meanwhile, after their win against Netherlands, Bangladesh is now close to get a Super 8s berth. Bangladesh faces Nepal in their last group match and a win will guarantee them a Super 8s slot. However, in case they lose, they better hope that Netherlands don’t win, or don’t win by a significant margin vs Sri Lanka in their last match of their campaign. South Africa have qualified from this group and either of Bangladesh or Netherlands will only join South Africa.
