Pakistan’s cricketer Babar Azam has stepped down as the white-ball captain of the national team. He was initially removed from the role following his team’s disappointing campaign in the ODI World Cup 2023. However, after just three months, the 29-year-old was reappointed to the position in March 2024.

In a heartfelt post shared across social media, Babar announced his decision to resign, marking a major shift in the leadership of Pakistan’s limited-overs squad.

Babar Azam’s post

Babar Azam announced his resignation, sharing the news in a social media post. He informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and team management of his decision last month. The right-handed batter expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the team but noted that the additional responsibilities of captaincy had become overwhelming. He emphasized his desire to focus on his batting and spend more time with his family.

Pakistan’s next white-ball assignments include tours of Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa over the next six months. With Shaheen Afridi having been previously removed from the T20I captaincy, the debate over who will lead Pakistan’s limited-overs squad continues.

The Lahore-born cricketer currently holds the top position in the ICC batting rankings of the ODI format with a rating of 824 points as he stands well ahead of India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, who is ranked second with 765 points. In addition to his ODI dominance, Babar is also ranked fifth among T20I batters.

Here are his batting stats across various formats of International cricket so far:

Amid inconsistent performances and growing scrutiny, Babar’s move signals a desire to shift focus back to his primary strength—his batting. His decision to relinquish the captaincy could be seen as a step toward regaining his form and concentrating on what he does best.
