Venkatesh Iyer was not retained by KKR ahead of the IPL 2025 auction

Venkatesh Iyer played a crucial role in KKR lifting the title last season. He scored 370 runs in just 13 innings at an average of 46.25 and a strike rate of 158.79. But with the limited retention rule, KKR couldn’t retain him, and he was released ahead of the auction.

Notably, he was retained by KKR ahead of Shubman Gill in 2022. That indicates the trust the franchise has in him. That is the reason that the franchise wanted to have him back. They had an intense bidding war with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and they ended up winning the bid to acquire him.

Venkatesh Iyer is a renowned name on the Indian domestic circuit who plays for Madhya Pradesh and has also represented Mumbai. He made his debut in 2021 for Kolkata Knight Riders and made an impact right away when he scored 370 runs in just ten innings at the top and helped KKR qualify for the finals.

That season helped him earn his debut for India as well. In 2022, KKR retained him. So far, Iyer has been an integral part of KKR. He has played 51 games so far and scored 1326 runs at an average of 31.57 and a strike rate of 137.12, with one century and 11 half-centuries.

Venkatesh Iyer joined the IPL in 2021 as an uncapped player when KKR signed him for INR 20 lac. But his brilliant performance in his maiden season earned him a huge contract from KKR in the very next season. He was retained for a price of INR 8 crore for the next three seasons by KKR. But he has just gone almost triple his salary for INR 23.75 crore with the same franchise.
