Vrinda Rathi Becomes India’s First Female Test Umpire

Vrinda Rathi has achieved a significant milestone by becoming India’s first female test umpire. She accomplished this during the India vs England women’s test match in December 2023 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Her contribution to cricket has been recognized by the World Records Book of India, solidifying her place in history.

Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, Rathi was awarded a certificate to acknowledge her achievements. Her journey in cricket began when she cleared the umpiring exam of the Mumbai Cricket Association in 2014, followed by the Board of Cricket Control of India exam in 2018. Her dedication and skill were further recognized when she was promoted to the ICC Development Panel of Umpires in 2020.

Rathi’s impressive umpiring career includes officiating at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and participating in major international events like the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the Asian Games, and the Women’s Asia Cup. She has officiated 20 Men’s T20 Internationals, 1 Women’s Test Match, 11 Women’s One Day Internationals, and 60 Women’s T20 Internationals.

Born on February 14, 1989, Vrinda Rathi was an aspiring cricketer who played for the University of Mumbai. Her passion for the game extended beyond playing, as she also worked as a scorer in the 2013 Women’s World Cup. Inspired by New Zealand umpire Cathy Cross, Rathi pursued her dream of becoming a cricket umpire, breaking new ground for women in India and the cricketing world.
