Former India captain Virat Kohli stunned everyone when he dropped his official retirement announcement from Test cricket, taking to his official handle to make the announcement.
Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket has stunned most, as Team India is set to tour England for a 5 match Test series commencing from June 20.
Captain Rohit Sharma’s retirement already made a significant impact. Now, Virat Kohli’s absence will be big for a new unit as the side lack experienced teammate.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Ranji coach has made a big revelation about Virat Kohli’s retirement. Talking on Star Sports, he revealed that he spoke with Virat Kohli few weeks back when he asked him about playing in the County to prepare for the England.
Virat Kohli instead told him that he will play 2 India A matches and added that he wants to hit 4-5 centuries in the England series, referring back to the 2018 edition.
“I spoke to Virat a few weeks ago and asked if he’d play county cricket to prepare for the England series. He said, ‘I’ll play 2 India A matches in England,’ and added, ‘I want to hit 4-5 centuries in the England series, like I did in 2018 when he came to the play the Ranji match,” said the Delhi team head coach.
So according to the Delhi Ranji team coach’s remark, Virat Kohli had no intention to retire from the format early in the year. So what did happen after that Kohli changed his mind is only known to Virat Kohli.
For the unversed, former India captain Virat Kohli approached the BCCI and announced his decision to retire from Test cricket himself, although he was in the scheme of things for the England series.
The BCCI urged Kohli to rethink his decision while chief selector Ajit Agarkar also had a chat with the star batter about his changing mind. However, to no surprise to anyone, Virat Kohli today took to his official social media and announced his decision to retire from the format.

With his retirement from Test cricket, Virat Kohli has now bid adieu to two different formats of the game, i.e., T20I after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and now Test cricket in May 2025.
With this, Virat Kohli fans would now see the star batter play only in the One Day Internationals (ODI) for India. He will also feature for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in a 2-month-long T20 league, the Indian Premier League (IPL).
