Shubman Gill’s run-out in the Gujarat Titans vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match on May 2, 2025, during the Indian Premier League (IPL), has triggered widespread controversy and discussions among fans and experts. The moment took place in the 13th over of the first innings and quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament so far.

What happened during the run-out?

Shubman Gill was in top form, batting fluently on 76 off 38 balls. He and Jos Buttler were looking to keep up the scoring rate. On the fifth ball of the 13th over, Buttler tapped a delivery from Zeeshan Ansari towards short fine leg and called for a quick single.

Harshal Patel, fielding in that area, quickly picked up the ball and threw it toward the striker’s end. Wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen tried to flick the incoming ball onto the stumps with his gloves in an attempt to run out the non-striker, Shubman Gill.

The ball appeared to deflect slightly after brushing Klaasen’s gloves before it hit the stumps. The third umpire reviewed the footage to determine whether it was the ball or the gloves that dislodged the bails.

After several replays, the third umpire noticed a change in the ball’s path and concluded that it was the ball that caused the bails to fall. Based on this, Shubman Gill was declared run out.

Gill’s reaction to the decision

Shubman Gill looked visibly upset as he walked back to the pavilion. He had a short conversation with the fourth umpire near the boundary rope, expressing his displeasure with the decision. It was clear that Gill felt the ball had hit Klaasen’s gloves first and that the stumps should not have been considered legally broken.

Later in the post-match presentation, Gill addressed the moment. He said that there were emotions involved and it was natural to feel disappointed when a player gives his best.

He said, “There was a little bit of a discussion between me and the umpire. Sometimes when you give your 110 percent, there are bound to be emotions.”

How it affected the match

Despite Gill’s dismissal, Gujarat Titans continued to dominate the innings. With strong performances from Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler, GT posted a massive total of 224 for 6 in their 20 overs.

In response, Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled to keep up with the run rate and eventually lost the match by 38 runs. The win gave GT crucial points in the IPL 2025 standings.

The run-out decision did not affect the result of the match, but it became the center of post-match debates on social media and cricket shows. Many fans and former cricketers expressed mixed opinions on whether the decision was correct.
