“We’re Not Far Off”: Ruturaj Gaikwad Reflects on Loss to Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025

After Chennai Super Kings’ narrow loss to the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, stand-in skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad fronted the post-match presentation with a clear and honest assessment of what went wrong—and what still gives him hope going forward. CSK failed to chase down a target of 180, eventually falling short despite a spirited effort. While the result didn’t go their way, Gaikwad’s measured take on the game showed the mindset of a leader who understands both the fine margins and the bigger picture.
“180 Was Chasable” – Ruturaj Gaikwad
Gaikwad began by acknowledging that the Royals’ total was within reach. “I was really happy at the innings break. They were looking good for 210, but 180 was chasable,” he said, indicating that CSK had pulled things back well with the ball in the second half of RR’s innings.
But the chase never really clicked. Gaikwad pointed to critical misfields and tactical errors, especially against an in-form Nitish Rana, who found boundaries consistently behind square. “Nitish batted well and we were not proactive knowing he was going behind square. We should have made him play in front of the wicket,” he admitted. He also noted that 8–10 runs were leaked through misfields—extra runs that proved costly in a tight finish.
Batting Position Switch – A Planned Move
One of the standout talking points this season has been Gaikwad’s batting position. Traditionally opening the innings, he has slotted in at No. 3 in the last few matches. Speaking on that, he said the decision was made during the auction phase, hinting at a pre-planned team strategy: “Over the years Ajinkya batted at 3 and Rayudu was taking care of the middle-overs. We thought it would be better if I came a bit late to take care of the middle overs and Tripathi can bat aggressively at the top.”
Despite the adjustment, Gaikwad maintained a positive attitude: “Anyway, it doesn’t matter because I am getting to bat early in the three games (smiles).” This shows his flexibility and willingness to adapt based on the team’s needs.
Noor, Khaleel, and Jaddu Bhai – Bowling Bright Spots
Even in defeat, Gaikwad found positives—particularly in the bowling department. He was full of praise for Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad, who has continued his impressive form this season, as well as pacer Khaleel Ahmed and veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. “Noor as usual bowling well, Khaleel bowling well and Jaddu bhai bowled well as well,” he said.
Momentum, according to Gaikwad, is the key ingredient currently missing. “You need some momentum in the bowling department. I think once everything comes together and we have the momentum, we will be a really good side.”
