Why India vs Australia Test Series Is Called Border-Gavaskar Trophy?

The Indian cricket team and the Australian cricket team is two of the most dominant teams in the game of bat and ball. Both the teams share a great sporting rivalry and when these two teams faces-off against each other, it is one of the most intriguing cricket series in the world, which is why the red ball format of the series is known as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian cricket team has a long-standing rivalry with the Australian cricket team, even before the funky formats came into play, when there was only the classic red and white. With the introduction of ODI and T20I formats, the rivalry between India and Australia has just been ignited further and further. But the true essence of India – Australia rivalry remains in the Test format, which is why it is called the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Why is it called Border-Gavaskar Trophy?
The fundamental of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is distinguished after two of the most brilliant cricketers who graced the game for these two respective countries, Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar. This is in a sense, a bit of tribute to the former captain of their respective teams. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is, as of now, only played in Test format and it mainly consists of 5 matches. Both the teams take a turn in hosting the matches. The winner of series is given a beautiful Trophy, and in case the series ends in a draw, the team that already holds the trophy will retain the trophy and will be declared champion.
Although Test series between the two teams are played from the year 1935 onwards, the official Border-Gavaskar Trophy matches started from the 1996-1997 onwards. Since then, a total of 16 seasons of the trophy has been played between the two teams. Team India has won 10 times while Australia have won 5 times while once it ended in a draw with India retaining the trophy.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024
The latest edition of Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to be held this November 2024 leading up to the New Year. Australia will be holding this edition of the series with the first match to be played from 22nd November in Perth. The following matches will be played from 6 December in Adelaide, from 14 December in Brisbane, from 26 December (also known as Boxing Day Test) in Melbourne and the last match of the series will be played from 3rd January 2025 in Sydney.

It is Team India who currently holds the trophy after winning the series the last time around in 2022-2023 season, played in India. Team India led by Rohit Sharma, won the series 2-1 with wins coming in 1st Test in Nagpur and 2nd Test in Delhi. Australia won the third Test in Indore and the 4th and final Test match ended in a draw in Ahmedabad.
