Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: How can Harmanpreet Kaur led India still qualify for the semi-final

India revived their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a six-wicket victory over Pakistan in Dubai, following a 52-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match. This win marks India’s first point in Group A, while Pakistan had previously earned points by defeating Sri Lanka. India now faces two crucial matches in the group stage and must win both to boost their chances of reaching the semifinals. Only the top two teams from each group advance, and India can achieve a maximum of six points.
Should India lose to Australia after beating Sri Lanka in their final group game, they would need help from other teams’ results to qualify. India might benefit now that New Zealand has lost its game against Australia. If they lose both of its matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. In such scenarios, two teams would end up tied at four points each, and qualification for the next round would then hinge on the Net Run Rate.

India vs Sri Lanka
The last time these two teams met in the Asia Cup final a few months ago, Sri Lanka emerged on the top. India would not only want to make it even against Sri Lanka but would also like to win with a good margin to ensure their Net Run Rate gets better.
Sri Lanka has lost both of their games so far. In their first game, they lost to Pakistan and in the 2nd game they were handed a drubbing by the defending champions Australia. They are all but out of the tournament unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat.

India vs Australia
India plays Australia on the 13th of October. Australia has been India’s nemesis for a while. India defeated Australia in the group stages of the 2020 T20 World Cup but Australia came back to beat them in the final at the MCG. 3 years later in 2023 Australia once again beat India in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup.
Australia had also beat India in the 2022 Commonwealth Games Gold medal match. So it won’t be an easy task for the Indian team to beat Australia. Australia struggled a bit against Sri Lanka in their first game in the World Cup, but they defeated the White Ferns by 60 runs in their 2nd game and are looking strong as ever.
India would have to be at their extreme best to defeat Australia.
