Do the PBKS have the chance to make the playoffs in 2025? Find out by following Crictips’ IPL results as and when they happen.
PBKS IPL Performances
Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) entered the IPL with promise but have struggled to find consistent success. Their journey has been marked by moments of brilliance, instability in leadership, and an inability to sustain momentum over multiple seasons.
They started well in 2008, finishing third, but then endured several underwhelming campaigns. Their best season came in 2014 when they topped the league stage and finished as runners-up. However, they have since remained on the fringes, never quite managing to recapture that success.
The Tumultuous Early Years
In 2010, Punjab was expelled from the IPL alongside Rajasthan Royals due to ownership transgressions. Although they were later reinstated, this uncertainty affected their team-building strategy. The 2011 season was particularly challenging as they entered the mega auction with no retained players.
Despite occasional flashes of brilliance, Punjab struggled to establish a solid core. Their performances in the early years were largely inconsistent, with multiple mid-table finishes.
The 2014 Breakthrough and the Subsequent Decline
The 2014 season saw Punjab assemble an explosive squad featuring Glenn Maxwell, David Miller, and George Bailey. They dominated the group stage, winning 11 matches, but fell just short in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders. Since then, Punjab has failed to reach another IPL final.
Their decline was steep in 2015, finishing last despite having many of the same players from their successful 2014 campaign. In the following seasons, they remained a lower-mid-table team, unable to string together consistent performances.
The 2020s: Continual Rebuilding
Punjab Kings have remained one of the most inconsistent sides in recent years. Despite possessing strong batting line-ups, they have failed to capitalize on key moments. Frequent leadership changes have also contributed to their lack of direction, with Mayank Agarwal taking over as captain in 2022 and being replaced by Shikhar Dhawan in 2023.
One of their biggest moments in recent years came in 2024 when they set the world record for the highest successful T20 chase, gunning down 262 against KKR.

IPL 2025 Auction: Punjab Kings
Punjab Kings made a bold statement in the IPL 2025 auction, splashing ₹119.65 crore in an aggressive bid to rebuild their squad. With only ₹35 lakh left in their purse, they focused on acquiring experienced match-winners and adding depth across all departments.
The Big Buys
PBKS’ most high-profile signing was Shreyas Iyer, who was secured for a massive ₹26.75 crore after an intense bidding war with Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Iyer, fresh off leading KKR to the IPL title last season, brings leadership and stability to Punjab’s batting order.
Another headline purchase was Yuzvendra Chahal for ₹18 crore. The veteran leg-spinner, IPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker, will spearhead Punjab’s spin attack. His presence adds much-needed experience and control in the middle overs.
PBKS also added Marcus Stoinis (₹11 crore) and Glenn Maxwell (₹4.2 crore) to bolster their all-rounder department. Both bring power-hitting ability and handy bowling options, making Punjab a more balanced side.
On the pace front, PBKS retained Arshdeep Singh (₹18 crore), their most consistent fast bowler in recent seasons, while also adding Marco Jansen (₹7 crore) and Lockie Ferguson (₹2 crore) to strengthen their pace attack.
Smart Purchases and Squad Depth
Beyond the marquee signings, Punjab Kings focused on building a deep squad. They secured emerging talent Nehal Wadhera for ₹4.2 crore, alongside several all-rounders like Azmatullah Omarzai (₹2.4 crore) and Aaron Hardie (₹1.25 crore).
For the wicket-keeping slot, PBKS snapped up Josh Inglis for ₹2.6 crore and Vishnu Vinod for ₹95 lakh, ensuring solid backup options.
After being acquired by Punjab Kings, Chahal expressed his enthusiasm:
“I was quite nervous and anxious because this amount is what I got in the last three seasons combined. I think I deserve this price, and I am very excited. My bond with Shreyas Iyer and Arshdeep Singh is strong, and I will also get to learn a lot from Ricky Ponting sir.”
